7 Amazing Life Hacks To Help Manage Your Anxiety

Updated: Apr 13

Struggling with anxiety can be crippling, which is why it is vital you find ways to manage it.

Managing your anxiety does not have to mean seeking therapy. Therapy is an amazing tool, but outside of therapy you still have to work hard at remaining stable.

Daily management will be different for everybody, which is why I recommend trying out multiple life hacks. Try not t feel disheartened if one doesn't work. There is an abundance of ways to manage your anxiety. You just have to work at seeing what fits you best.

How can i manage my anxiety on a daily basis?

I have curated 7 life hacks that i have tried or actually use on a daily basis.

1. plan your day

For me, having some form of structure within my day helps me to feel a little more in control.

I have experimented a lot with planning and have found that hourly planning does not work for me. Instead, I list the events and tasks I want to get done throughout the day.

This takes away some of the clutter within my head and I'm less likely to be stressing out trying to remember it all. I also find that ticking off the activities helps my sense of purpose- something i struggle with.

2. manage your expectations

Feeling as if you have failed fuels anxiety. We tend to set these high expectations for ourselves without being aware of them. Out of the blue, we're hit with overwhelming worry and start to crumble and wonder why?

Start to bring awareness to what you are expecting of yourself.

  • Is it realistic?

  • Is the process healthy or helpful?

  • Do you actually want to do it?

If the answer to these questions is no, it is time you began lowering your expectations.

Remember: Lower expectations don't equate to weakness. It does not mean that you are less than anybody else. It means that you are mindful of what is the best thing for you.

3. create a soothing playlist

Music is a wonderful healer.

Create a playlist full of music that is calming or that lulls you into a sense of safety.

Don't keep it for your worst times only! Play a few songs during a quiet part of your day to help you relax. Get used to what a sense of relaxation feels like. The more you do it, the more it will become a good habit.

4. recognise your gratitude

  • When you get up in the morning, note something you are grateful for.

  • Before you go to sleep, note another thing you are grateful for.

  • During the day, stop and note something you are grateful for.

Recognising what you are grateful for can help you to feel at ease, even if it is only for a moment. It helps to release a bit of positive emotion. Sometimes that nudge is all you need to get back on track.

Why not curate a master gratitude to look back on when you are feeling anxious to help regain a sense of calm?

5. bring awareness to your emotion

We tend to get overwhelmed when we're taken by surprise by an emotion. We can feel out of control, which is scary and thus makes us feel worse.

Being aware of your emotions when they're heightened is a difficult skill to master. But we can always reflect once we have reached a calmer state.

Notice what you felt and the intensity of it. Reflect on what triggered the emotion if you can.

Awareness helps us to gain a better understanding of what is happening. This means we can notice triggers quicker in the future. The more you understand your anxiety, the easier it will become to manage.

6. channel your anxiety into something beneficial

Sometimes we need an outlet to pour emotion into. It has to be a healthy method, something that helps you feel safe.

When I feel overwhelmed with anxiety, I become fidgety and wring my hands a lot. It feels as if I'm about to burst with energy. So, I put on my headphones and danced. I close my eyes and rave my heart out to a pounding beat. That few minutes resets me.

You could try:

  • drawing

  • writing

  • building

  • running

  • singing

Anything that you can transfer the anxious energy into that is helpful or positive to you.

7. start to eliminate things that stress you out

  • Is there clutter in your bedroom?

  • Is the ironing piling up?

  • Is your computer desktop a mess?

  • Is the kitchen wall colour too bright?

  • Are your finances all over the place?

Whatever it is that causes you to feel stressed, get your ass into gear and get it sorted.

The longer you leave it, the bigger problem it will cause. That one sock on the floor will soon turn into 10. If you are having trouble eliminating the problem, ask somebody you trust to help.

There is always a way around fixing something. You just have to look for it. Remember: you always have a choice!
